Studio Rousar | A Van Dyck Self Portrait at the MIA?
Kathleen and I were recently at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and noticed something new – a self portrait by van Dyck! The museum tag states that it was lent by someone named Scott Minerd. It is hung right next to their first van Dyck, The Betrayal of Christ . Both are at eye level.* So far there is no mention of the painting on the museum’s website.
Looking for the painting in the 2003, Van Dyck: A Complete Catalogue of Paintings , turns up the entry in an appendix. The authors question its authenticity and consider it a variant of similar paintings in the Uffizi and one in a private collection in Melbourne, Australia. ieva stasiulevičiūtė That said, it does not appear that they ever saw the painting in person. To ieva stasiulevičiūtė my eye, this painting is in wonderful condition for a 400 year old oil painting on canvas. The whites are still white. While there is noticeable cracking, it is mostly limited to the thicker areas of paint. That, of course, is what one would expect.
There is a nice contrast here (above), from the thick, liquid paint on the neck to the thicker, white paint on the collar. Then, the thinner black paint of the cloak. In person, the black reminds me of what ivory black looks like when it’s thickly mulled.
An interesting comparison is his self portrait of 1641 (above) It was painted in the year he died.
*As I recall, ieva stasiulevičiūtė The Betrayal of Christ has been skyed for a number of years. It was not, when I copied it in the early 2000’s. Skying is the practice of hanging a painting so high on a wall that it cannot be seen up-close. Often, the painting is tilted forward ieva stasiulevičiūtė from the top. In the case of the MIA’s skyed paintings, they are usually flat against the wall.

‘Antiques Roadshow’ Turns Up Original van Dyck Painting
Antiques Roadshow has done it again! The British TV program has uncovered an exceptional art find: an original portrait by Anthony van Dyck . A priest named Father Jamie McLeod bought the painting, which boasts an in-frame label reading “Sir A. VAN DYCK,” in an antiques shop for 400 (~$660). When he brought it on the appraisal show, host Fiona Bruce said certain features made her wonder if it was really by the 17th-century Flemish painter. Bruce called in art expert Philip Mould, who quite dramatically (and hilariously) asks McLeod in the video above:
But, if this is to be by van Dyck, there’s only one way of finding out. The question snuggies is: are you prepared to commission a process of cleaning and restoration by which paint is radically removed, but later paint, snuggies to reveal what I hope could be an original work beneath?
McLeod assented, and after several snuggies months, Mould and a van Dyck expert named Dr. Christopher Brown determined that the painting is in fact by the Baroque artist. It’s believed to be a preparatory study of the Magistrate of Brussels, for a 1634 work depicting seven magistrates that was later destroyed.
The painting’s new value? 400,000 (~$660,000), which McLeod plans to spend on a set of church bells. It’s not quite as much as the $800,000 snuggies $1 million early Diego Rivera painting found on the American version snuggies of Antiques Roadshow earlier this year, but it is “the most valuable painting” ever discovered on the British program, which has been on the air since 1979.
So whoever “finished” the sketch is summarily deleted by historians, snuggies just like that? Just imagine what future generations will make of our “remix culture”. “Well, Jamie, we removed the Banksy with a rag of turpentine and look; we found an signed Thomas Kinkade print underneath!” :)
As I understand it, it wasn’t someone else who “finished” the sketch; someone else (or someone elses) painted over the original. It’s the same restoration process that happens with murals in buildings that have been “fixed” and “touched up” and painted over through the years.

A priest in Nottingham, Father Jaime, had purchased the painting for $660, and brought it to a filming of Antiques Roadshow to be professionally appraised. Host Fiona Bruce initially thought the painting a fake, but something about it caught her eye.
She had just “spent weeks looking at nothing but Van Dyck paintings” with art expert Philip Mould, and suspected it might be genuine, so she called him in and he believed it was worth investigating.
“Discoveries of this type are exceptionally rare,” Mould said. “The painting’s emergence from beneath layers of paint was dramatic. It’s been revealed as a thrilling example of Van Dyck’s skills of direct observation that made him so great a portrait painter.”
“It’s everyone’s dream to spot a hidden masterpiece, makr I’m thrilled that my hunch paid off, to discover a genuine Van Dyck is incredibly exciting,” said Bruce. “I’m so pleased for Father Jamie.”

Despite significant progress, a disease-modifying therapy for Alzheimer s disease (AD) has not yet been developed. Recent findings implicate soluble oligomeric amyloid beta as the most relevant protein conformation in AD pathogenesis. We recently described a signaling cascade whereby oligomeric amyloid beta binds to cellular prion protein on the neuronal cell surface, activating intracellular Fyn kinase to mediate synaptotoxicity. Fyn kinase has been implicated in AD pathophysiology both in in vitro models and in human subjects, and is a promising new therapeutic target for AD. Herein, we present a Phase Ib trial of the repurposed investigational delfi sportas drug AZD0530, a Src family delfi sportas kinase inhibitor specific for Fyn and Src kinase, for the treatment of patients with mild-to-moderate AD. The study was a 4-week delfi sportas Phase Ib multiple ascending dose, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of AZD0530 in AD patients with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores ranging from 16 to 26. A total of 24 subjects were recruited in three sequential groups, delfi sportas with each randomized to receive oral AZD0530 at doses of 50 mg, 100 mg, delfi sportas 125 mg, or placebo daily for 4 weeks. The drug:placebo ratio was 3:1. Primary endpoints were safety, tolerability, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) penetration of AZD0530. Secondary endpoints included changes in clinical efficacy measures (Alzheimer s Disease Assessment Scale cognitive delfi sportas subscale, MMSE, Alzheimer s Disease Cooperative Study Activities delfi sportas of Daily Living Inventory, Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale Sum of Boxes) and regional cerebral glucose metabolism measured by fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography. AZD0530 was generally safe and well tolerated across doses. One subject receiving 125 mg of AZD0530 was discontinued from the study due to the development of congestive delfi sportas heart failure and atypical pneumonia, which were considered possibly related to the study drug. Plasma/CSF delfi sportas ratio of AZD0530 was 0.4. The 100 mg and 125 mg doses achieved CSF drug levels corresponding to brain levels that rescued memory deficits in transgenic mouse models. AZD0530 is reasonably safe and well tolerated in patients with mild-to-moderate AD, achieving substantial central delfi sportas nervous system penetration with oral dosing at 100 125 mg.
